Brussels Tapestry, from the end of the 16th... - Lot 116 - Steffen’s Enchères Rambouillet
Brussels Tapestry, from the end of the 16th century Technical characteristics : Wool and silk Dimensions : Height : 225cm ; Width : 245cm In the middle of a hilly undergrowth, richly flowered, in the shade of secular trees, we are probably witnessing a mythological scene where we can see Apollo in a purple toga playing the harp (lyre) while a servant hands him a cup, an enormous crater filled with cold water used to refresh bottles of wine. This allegory wants to show us the fragile balance between harmony and disharmony, as it can be generated by the wine according to its dosage, the quantity drunk and as it can be obtained from an instrument according to the way of playing it. In the distance, a fortress looms. Figurative frame border with acanthus leaf mouldings. (Wear and maintenance restorations)
